We provide children with a range of opportunities to practice their English skills in a range of other curriculum areas. 



At Terrington School we teach systematic synthetic phonics. We follow 'Letters & Sounds' and include 'Jolly Phonics' actions. Phonics is taught daily in Class 1 and weekly in Class 2. Children learn phases 1 to 6, for more information on the different phase expectations please click on the link below or ask the class teachers.  

At the end of Year 1 all children complete the 'Phonics Screening Check' that is administered by the class teacher. The children have to read a range of 'real' and 'nonsense words' that test children's ability to recognise sounds and blend words.

Speaking and Listening

We regularly plan a range of speaking and listen activities in all areas of the curriculum. In all lessons children are given opportunities to discuss ideas with 'talk partners', work in groups and share ideas with the class. We encourage good speaking and listening behaviours which we discuss during focussed English sessions. All genres in English begin with speaking, listening and drama activities.


Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG)

SPAG is taught through English lessons and phonics. The children learn about spellings, punctuation and grammar by completing engaging group or paired work, whole class teaching and interactive activities. We make our SPAG activities stimulating and as active as possible!



Reading is taught through phonics and during English lessons. We provide children with a rich environment to help develop confident readers. We regularly complete group reading, shared reading and independent reading activities with children across all curriculum subjects. All children receive home readers that are 'book banded'. When a child can read the 'colour band' fluently and accurately teachers will move children onto the next stage. During guided reading children will read the stage above their home reader. 


Guided Reading

The children complete guided reading weekly during a carousel of activities. Guided reading is lead by the class teachers and the children are in ability groups. We have recently bought new guided reading books which the children are thoroughly enjoying. 



We take great pride in our handwriting and strive for excellence in our children's presentation. Handwriting is taught daily for 10 minutes. When children enter year 2 they are taught the cursive script as children progress into upper key stage 2 handwriting pens are available.


Bug Club

Children are given the opportunity to complete 'Active Learn- Bug Club' during school. Active Learn is an online reading scheme coupled with comprehension questions. Class teachers set children suitable books to read. The children answer the questions and a report on accuracy is sent to the teacher. Please find the school code, usernames and passwords for Active Learn in the front of planners.
